A Brief History of Teterboro Airport

Teterboro Airport property was initially acquired in 1917, making it one of the oldest operating airports in the United States and the oldest one in the New York area. It was named after Walter C. Teter, who purchased the land in 1917. After the First World War, Teteboro worked as the operating base for the dutch aircraft designer Anthony Fokker, who actually got his license suspended after flying a low-pass over the control tower in January 1954. The airport started its operations in 1919 with its first flight and in 1926 Colonial Air Transport was the first private company at Teterboro who started delivering mail by air. During the Second World War, the airport was under the oversight of the United States of America military.

Later on, when the war ended the airport was purchased on the 1st of April 1949 from Fred L. Wehran, a private owner, by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. In the 1970s the airport was loaned to Pan American Airways which mantained control of it until the 1st of Decemeber 2000, when the Port Authority decided to assume entire responsability for the airport. In 2003, a member of the U.S. Congress, Steve Rothman, contributed in issuing a decree of law regarding a take-off ban for all aircraftabove 45 tons of weight as noise was starting to become a major problem in the residential areas. This effectively indicates that commercial aviation is almost non existent.
